Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs in Halton
Electrical OYAP
Concentrated OYAP is a program specifically designed to help students make
a smooth successful transition from high school directly into their post-secondary
education Electrician apprenticeship.
Similar apprenticeship preparation certificate programs are also offered
at local community colleges, and private technical training centres. They
can cost between $2,500 and $8700 at these other sites. This program is
offered at only 1 secondary school in Halton. It is a dual credit program
with Sheridan College, where part of the time, the student will be at Sheridan
College, Brampton Campus earning Sheridan College credits. The program has
spent time helping Habitat for Humanity and local community agencies with
hands on electrical projects. The program has a 90% employment rate for
students who have completed the program. The program has industry standard
equipment.

Electrician OYAP
The Electrical Concentrated OYAP Program follows the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Curriculum Guidelines for the Common Core for the electrician trades

Industrial Electricians: (NOC code 7242)
Industrial electricians install, maintain, test, troubleshoot and repair industrial electrical equipment and associated electrical and electronic controls. They are employed by electrical contractors and maintenance departments of factories, plants, mines, shipyards and other industrial establishments. Construction Electricians (Construction Maintenance Electrician): (NOC code 7241)
Construction electricians in this unit group lay out, assemble, install,
test, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices
and related equipment in buildings and other structures. They are employed
by electrical contractors and maintenance departments of buildings and other
establishments, or they may be self-employed. The most important Essential
Skills for this occupation are: Data Analysis, Measurement and Calculation,
Money Math, Numerical Estimation, Problem Solving, Reading Text, Scheduling
or Budgeting and Accounting **

Salaries
This is a 9,000 hour apprenticeship under the Trade Qualification Apprenticeship Act (approximately 5 years) Earnings: $14 - $42 per hours and can make up to $30,000 - $85,000 per year plus benefits and even more with overtime.

- Over the next tree years, 1,500 power workers will be retiring and need
replacing (Hydro One).
Students that are successful in this program earning all four of their
in-school credits and a minimum of 2 Coop Credits will earn a Concentrated
OYAP pre-Apprenticeship Certificate. This indicates that the students have
successfully completed the Concentrated OYAP Program.
All students may challenge the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
exemption exam. However it is recommended that only students, who have earned
a minimum of 70% on all units with an overall average of 80%, consider writing
this exam. Students with an overall average of 80% will earn a Concentrated
OYAP pre-Apprenticeship Certificate with Honours.
Students who are successful in challenging the exemption exam will be granted
a Concentrated OYAP Exemption Certificate. Passing this exam means students
may be exempt from the first level of Apprenticeship Training. (For
Electrical OYAP, it is not recommended to challenge the exam because of
the high risk nature of the trade)
